Here at Woodcreek Dental, we can help you get that bright Instagram-worthy smile. Teeth whitening is one of our most popular services, so we are happy to help you better understand the procedure even before scheduling your first appointment. Here we will explain how the procedure is done, if there are any risks, and how to maintain your new smile.
What is Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening is a procedure where we use a bleaching agent to make your teeth brighter. Despite its name, the treatment might not make your teeth perfectly white, but it will lighten them by a few shades. Although there are some DIY kits for at-home whitening, we do not recommend those because they are risky and only work on the surface level.
What Does The Procedure Look Like?
We will start with an initial assessment, to make sure this procedure is right for you and to give you all the information you need. We use two different methods for the procedure. If we select the first method, we will take an impression of your teeth and create a mouthguard. We will give you instructions to apply the bleaching gel with the help of the mouthguard. You will have to repeat this process for about 2 to 4 weeks. We can also apply the bleaching agent for you, which will require regular visits until you are completely happy with the results.
Laser procedure, also known as ‘power whitening,’ is available to our patients too. We will protect your gums, and paint a bleaching product on your teeth and activate it with the help of a laser. The procedure takes about one hour, so it is best for those of you who have a busy schedule. We can get your teeth up to eight shades lighter in a single visit by using this technique.
What You Should Know Before Teeth Whitening
In most cases, teeth whitening is done for cosmetic purposes alone, so it is not usually covered by insurance. However, it may be covered if there is a medical reason for the procedure. These occasions are rare, though, so you will most likely need to cover the entire cost of the treatment out of pocket.
Unfortunately, teeth whitening cannot deliver permanent results, but it can last up to 3 years. This will depend on your dental hygiene, and whether you smoke and drink red wine and coffee regularly. Some foods and spices also have a staining effect on teeth. After the treatment, we will instruct you on the best practices to keep your smile bright as long as possible.
Contrary to at-home treatments that can permanently damage your teeth, professional teeth whitening is a safe procedure. People with sensitive gums or teeth may not be able to do the treatment, which is why we always schedule an initial assessment before the procedure.
