At Woodcreek Dental, we consider the smile to be a very important part of one’s appearance. Being able to flash a full set of perfectly aligned white teeth makes people confident in their looks.
When the color and other aspects of a smile, however, change negatively, it can prove embarrassing to let anyone see. For this kind of problem, we offer several cosmetic dental services, including porcelain veneers. These are thin porcelain shells that recreate the appearance of healthy natural colored teeth. They are fitted on the front surface of forward-facing teeth.
They are customized to fit well around the damaged tooth and restore both appearance and function. They are also less intrusive and a quicker solution than braces, where the problem is minor crookedness. Although they are an expensive solution, they can last up around to two decades, making them a worthwhile investment.
Type of Veneers
The traditional veneers are made of porcelain. This material imitates natural enamel so well that within no time at all, you can hardly tell the difference. Porcelain is also resistant to decay and discoloration. This means you can carry on reasonably enjoying stain inducing food and drink. To fit them, some enamel will need to be filed down to make room for the shell.
There are newer no-prep veneers that are an alternative to traditional porcelain. Any alterations that must be made to the natural tooth to accommodate them are minimal. They are less intrusive than porcelain options and therefore do not require the use of anesthesia as they are unlikely to trigger any sensitivity.
How Veneers Are Installed
No preparation is required on the part of the patient. When you come in, our team will carry out an exam and discuss your options. If veneers are decided upon, then we begin by cleaning your teeth. This is important as we do not want to trap any bacteria that will cause decay under the veneer. We then use a grinding tool to file down the surface of the enamel. This will provide room for the shell when fitted.
We will then make a mold of your teeth. This, along with other information, will be sent to our lab so they can construct a properly shaped and sized veneer. A temporary veneer can be placed over the tooth to protect the surface and allow you comfortable use of your teeth until the permanent veneer is installed.
On your next appointment, we will confirm that the veneer is to your liking. It should fit well over the tooth and have a matching color. Etching is done to arrive at a roughened surface that will make bonding easier. We then use dental cement to bond the veneer to the tooth. Ultraviolet light is used to harden the cement quickly.
If you suffer from sensitivity, we can postpone the removing of excess material and polishing of the margins to the next appointment. This will give your mouth the chance to adjust to the feel of the veneer.
