For all our clients here at Woodcreek Dental, we highly recommend the practice of twice-annual cleanings. This is part of your regular dental checkup exam and plays an important role in preserving your oral health and the appearance of a bright smile. Plaque formation is a consequence of the normal pattern of eating and drinking. It is a deposit of bacteria that presents as a sticky white, or pale yellow, substance. Regular brushing and flossing of teeth do a good job of preventing plaque buildup, but it is not sufficient.
Professional cleanings help get rid of any plaque that manages to cling on despite a person’s best efforts. Plaque is formed when fluids, saliva, and food combine in the mouth. It begins to form four to twelve hours after brushing; hence, the recommended practice of a minimum twice daily brushing. The bacteria in plaque produce acid. This is what eats away at the tooth enamel, causing cavities and leads to the early development of gingivitis. It also discolors teeth and can promote bad breath.
Why You Should Have Your Teeth Cleaned
The most important reason to have teeth cleaned is to prevent cavities and gingivitis. If allowed to remain for too long, the damage to the teeth may require more extensive and expensive intervention to restore appearance and function. When allowed to form and buildup below the gum line, it can lead to gum disease that encourages tooth loss and sensitivity.
Deep cleanings and polishing remove plaque and surface stains that cause a person’s smile to appear discolored. The bacteria from tartar, the hardened buildup of plaque, is a common cause of bad breath. This can make interacting with people uncomfortable. Scaling is done as a part of cleanings to remove tartar and restore fresh breath and confidence.
Oral health has often been linked to other areas, including heart health. There are several conditions, including diabetes, which can be detected during these oral checks. Regular teeth cleanings are an important part of overall health care. As mentioned, it can also help save you money. Preventing more serious dental problems will automatically mean not having to spend additional money on expensive and lengthy restorative care down the road.
How Cleanings Work
Our team begins this procedure with an oral exam to check for particular areas of buildup and signs of other oral problems like gingivitis. Using a small mirror and scaler, we then go over each tooth to remove any plaque and tartar. This is done on the faces of the teeth and in between.
Once this removal is complete, we then polish your teeth with a high-powered brush and gritty toothpaste. While we do not recommend aggressive brushing of teeth, it is safe to have this polishing done twice a year by a professional. We also carry out a deep, flossing procedure. After a good rinse, we then provide a fluoride treatment where we apply the gel to a mouthpiece that will be placed over your teeth for about a minute. Fluoride offers good extended protection for teeth. An additional and instantly hardening fluoride varnish will also be applied.
This procedure is relatively painless and highly beneficial to your health. We recommend making your appointment with us by calling at Woodcreek Dental at (805) 482-6389 today.
