We have several sedation options to explore. In this post, we’ll be going over the services that we offer within our practice for sedation dentistry.
Short for intravenous sedation, this method involves inserting a needle in your vein and administering a sedative through the blood. It’s intended to induce a much deeper state of sedation than the other methods on this list might. Using IV sedation, you’ll drift close to unconsciousness without drifting away entirely.
You may discover that you have no recollection of your procedure after it takes place. With this type of deep sedative, you will still likely be awake and able to respond to questions that the dentist and staff may ask.
IV sedation is usually reserved for complex or lengthy procedures that would otherwise cause anxiety or pain.
This type of sedative renders you completely unconscious. It’s reserved for special circumstances and not usually available to most patients. In fact, due to the risky nature of this sedation technique, an anesthesiologist must be present for the duration of the procedure when general anesthesia is used.
Administered in liquid or pill form, this type of sedative can be adjusted to specific dosages. It usually makes you feel a bit drowsy, but you won’t become unconscious.
This style of sedation takes time to kick in, so it’s usually administered an hour or so before the procedure is scheduled to start. Common forms of oral sedation are Lorazepam, Triazolam, and Diazepam. This option is often chosen for patients due to its low cost and high effectiveness.
Nitrous oxide is the most common form of sedation used in dentistry. It is also one of the safest and easiest forms to administer. Nitrous oxide generally used to alleviate mild discomfort or general anxiety that can be caused by the dentist. When this is used, you’ll be given a small mask that can fit over your nose and be told to breathe through your nose. You’ll feel the effects quickly.
One reason that people love nitrous oxide is that it also fades away quickly. You can drive yourself home after the procedure, which is not possible after other types of sedation are used.
